Unfortunately Emergency Preparedness is a topic most people prefer not to discuss and
usually just push aside in hopes that nothing will ever happen.
But if we look back at the last few years, the number of severe natural and man made
disasters have significantly increased on US soil and we are no longer as safe as we like to
think.
During the cold war US residents were stocking up on emergency supplies, personal
underground bunkers and community shelters were built in order to be able to protect US
residents in the event of a disaster. People had basements filled with canned goods and
stockpiles of water along with other essential supplies. Gas-masks could be found next to
bags of potatoes and extra blankets.
Then the Berlin wall came down peacefully, the cold war ended and US residents felt safe
again. People started to forget about the importance of being prepared.
Generations of people that were born after the height of the cold war never had to deal with
issues of national security and were never even confronted with the need to prepare for
emergencies.
Under normal conditions products are readily available at any given time and people
unfortunately started taking these modern society amenities for granted. Many supply
stores are now open 24 hours a day and internet shopping allows online ordering with
convenient delivery service. Emergency preparedness was and is still being neglected.
People stopped asking themselves questions such as:
What if there is a disaster and our regular supply chains break down?
What if a disaster forces us to leave our homes at a moment’s notice?
What if electronics fail due to power supply problems and stores remain closed?
Will we still be able to get essential supplies?
Despite recent acts of terrorism on US soil and increasing numbers of severe natural
disasters most US residents are still living in a world of denial and are dangerously
unprepared for emergency situations. People have come to expect that the US
government will take care of them. And as the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina clearly
showed, people have neglected to take responsibility for the protection of their own lives.
That is why the US government and community leaders along with countless private
organizations and companies like us, CTC Products, are trying to raise awareness among
the public to prepare for emergencies.
Reality is that US residents need to take emergency preparedness back into their
own hands to ensure that they will be able to survive until government or private
aid services arrive to provide further assistance.
While emergency preparedness might not be the most exciting topic to discuss, it will be the
one topic that can save lives.
So what should be considered an emergency or a disaster situation?
In general emergencies and disasters are situations that happen without advance warning
and that are so out of the ordinary that they pose a danger to lives or property or both.
Emergencies and disasters can happen on various scales and involve one person to
families to entire cities. They can happen at any time at home, at work or on the road.
Some emergencies and disasters to consider preparing for are:
house fires
wild fires
traffic accidents (don't just think of a fender-bender, think exploding tank truck)
power outages for extended periods of time
earthquakes
hurricanes
heat wave
flooding
heavy snow storms
food contamination
tsunamis
industrial accidents
acts of terrorism

Denver, Colorado:

New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania:
weeks of rain cause major flooding, cities cut off from supply deliveries, bridged washed
out, power lost to thousands of residents and businesses, stores remain closed. State of
emergency declared by governor.
Long Beach, California:

completely lost.
Hikers lost for days in National Park.
We read and hear these headlines in the news every day, yet most of us
still do not see the need to get Emergency Supplies. Preparedness no
longer only refers to acts of war and terrorism alone, but should be applied
to emergencies that could happen to any of us at any time.
Rescued hungry and dehydrated.
Record number of Hurricanes and Tornados
- Experts are predicting 17 Hurricanes to hit US shores.
- Underwater earthquakes already have an will continue to pose Tsunami threads.
- 70% of the US population lives within 50 miles of US coast lines and well within those
danger zones.
- Lack of rainfall during the winter season increases thread of wildfires by over 400%
and might affect areas that are usually wildfire safe. More than ten thousand homes lie
in those newly identified danger-zones.
- Lack of rainfall in western states of the US might cause drought and shortage of water
