All TV broadcasting in the USA will switch to digital on
midnight Feb. 17, 2009 or June 12th, 2009 in some areas.
TV's like these might no longer work!
|
Currently thousands of retailers and manufacturers are trying to
clear their inventories by dumping millions of TV's similar to the ones
shown in the pictures on the market at very low prices.
They are being sold as portable TV's for outdoor, recreation and
even emergency use.
But most retailers including many Emergency Kit Sellers fail to inform
you that those cheap TVs will stop working after the switch to digital
unless you connect them to a digital converter box that must be
purchased separately and that (currently) can not run on batteries!
If you have recently purchased one of these type of battery-operated hand held TV's for
your emergency preparedness kit, or if you were thinking of getting one, be aware of the
following:
- most TV's that use 'rabbit' ear antennas such as these small hand held models are
designed to receive analog signals only and will no longer work unless they are
connected to a digital converter box.
- digital converter boxes must have 110 Volt power supply and models available today
can not be operated on batteries.
- If you do not have a 110 Volt power service available in an emergency, you can not
operate the digital tuner that is needed to provide the signal for the battery-operated
TV. A catch-22!
- Research the technical information of the TV model you are thinking of buying to
ensure it comes with a built-in digital converter and is ready to receive digital
broadcasting signals after Feb. 17, 2009 or June 12th 2009 in some areas.
They do not have your safety in mind when advertising these TV's. They only care about
selling those TV's as fast as they can before they become obsolete!
