We include battery-operated flashlights in
our Emergency and Survival Kits and no
crank-type or shake-type lights.
All crank-type or shake-type flashlights need to be charged for at least one minute before
they provide light.  When you are in an emergency situation, you need light immediately.
You can not put the emergency 'on hold' for 60 seconds until you had enough
time to charge up a light!
AND:  We also found that most of the low-cost (around $10 to $20) crank-type and
shake-type flashlights work great when they are brand new, but once you leave them for
several weeks or months without recharging, the batteries will deteriorate fast and they
will no longer hold a charge.

The instructions usually state that one minute wind-up or shaking provides up to 1 hour of
continuous light.

We have tested several models and found that even after cranking and shaking the units
for several minutes, the lights will only stay on for a few seconds and start to dim
immediately after switching them on.

In some cases we found that the light would not even shine a distance of 4 inches after
cranking or shaking them for 1 to 2 minutes.

The only way to keep the tested crank-lights working was to continuously crank them.
And shake lights can not provide any useful light while you shake them to recharge.
If you have recently purchased a crank-type or shake-type
flashlight and have not used it in a while, please take a moment
to test it!  Please check to see if it still works properly.  If it does
not, please immediately replace it with a more reliable
battery-operated light!
In an emergency you need light instantly and not in a minute or two.
You will not be able to safely evacuate when you have to use both hands to continuously
crank a light just to keep it functioning.
Always keep a battery-operated light ready!
For your own safety!
